It said that for this system you will need :
  • A large electrical power source
  • Metal coils lining a guideway or track
  • Large guidance magnets attached to the underside of the train
In short, a lot of electromagnetics.

Here's a maglev design that's totally passive.
That's a cool design. We use Halbach arrays to confine and focus ion beam surface charge on wafers for neutralization with a Xenon plasma. The problem with this method of levitation Earnshaws_theorem is that it requires relatively high motion (energy) to be stable in a simple configuration without mechanical constraint. To achieve stable levitation at 1 to 2 kilometers an hour must require some very strong magnets and a complex track coils but it should be possible to build a simple version using a fast moving 'car' with a cable constrain on the track.
