Why use so many inverters to make a squarewave signal? A phase-shift oscillator is usually linear and has a sinewave output if the gain of each amplifier is correct. The gain of a Cmos inverter is much too high unless it uses a series input resistor in addition to a negative feedback resistor.

Only one Schmitt-trigger inverter is needed to make a squarewave oscillator. Or two ordinary Cmos inverters. Do not use a CD4049 because its high and low outputs are not symmetrical.

 

This is a case study for that particular phase shift approach.

Yes, many other, better ways of generating and controlling oscillators.
