LM386 Gets Hot when I attach speaker

The picture of your breadboard looks like a mirror image. Pin 1 of the amp is in the lower right.....
Anyway, where is your output capacitor, C2 in the schematic? As wired, you are shorting the amplifier DC output to ground through the speaker. Good way to burn out both the amp and the speaker.

Thanks! I connected C2 back (had it there initally) and now it seems to be OK!
I must have made another error previously.

So why would you remove C2, a component shown on the schematic?
If your car doesn't run, do you remove a wheel? :rolleyes:
The amplifier parts aren't arbitrary or optional.

I was experimenting and fault finding. All good now - thanks :)
If you are going to package it and use it for something, do be sure to include the Zobel network (the series RC on the output) and other bypass caps as shown in the schematic. They are all there for a reason.
