Darwin is a statistical filter, not an absolute one. Your extant relatives got through one round but over the long haul, the filter will get them, or their progeny. That or the movie Idiocracy is a best estimator. Darwin will outlive democracy, the nanny state and us. The problem of course is we still have to put up with those relatives in the here and now. Bummer!
Oh, they've gotten through a lot more than one round -- enough so that the odds of it not being due to external influence are driven well into the basement.

Idiocracy was a good demonstration of The Cash Register Syndrome and my personal belief that civilization is a self-defeating concept.

Remember that random mutation with selective pruning is Darwin. The environment determines the pruning function. One cannot remove civilization from the effects of the environment and so the fittest will be defined by the environment they find themselves in and those with more favorable mutations will be selected for. My question is when does self directed mutation begin? Has it already? Anyone seen Gatica?

It's also the easiest shape to make in a standardized way.

It's hard to say what the original reason was or if there really even was a specific, explicit reason.

Edit: (sorry an ongoing debate in a small country sparked this post)

Why should we use our resources to exchange it to money and then buy oil drilled in a far away country?

I thought the whole debate was about being independent/self sufficient when it comes to resources.

Oil/coal/natural gas has no place as an energy source in the future. Since it will run out eventually.

I don't understand the point of the question.

If you can convince your government and your population to stop using oil, coal, and natural gas right now, go right ahead.

If you can convince your government and your population to get by on only the resources in your country, go right ahead.

Let's say that you were able to convince both your government and your population of both of those things. What would life in your country look like a year from now?

Realistically "eventually" is a very far way off and in fact they will always have some place in our world until a more cost effective and or practical replacement for each comes along which at the rate of practical advancement will put said replacements very far in the future for many key applications simply due to cost of operation considerations.

I think they must be, "person hole" covers by now.
What used to be a mail man is now a letter carrier, or as I call them, postal persons.
Thus my obscure reference to "PCQ", or "Politically Correctness Quotient ".

Mine is in the low single digit range. Maybe negative.
