Your auto-correct is a little crazy today. I don't know whether learning how to read auto-correct is increasing or decreasing my I.Q.:D
Yea, I know. :(

I'm working off of a different laptop I just loaded up to be my new-ish work shed computer (old one cant run itself plus the external 42' 1080 HD monitor at above ~300 x 400 resolution due to age and graphics processor capacity limits) and the newest version of spell check that loaded with the google chrome browser install is proving to be extremely challenging on what words it chooses to rewrite/replace for no justifiable reason.

I'm trying to catch things on the proof reads but it's running me over big time with a whole new range of new common keywords it wants to put substitutes in for that the older version didn't have issues with. With the old version I had most of its common misreplacement words memorized and knew what to watch for but this ones got a whole new set to learn to deal with.

I hate autocorrect. I once asked if (someone) was in the house and for some reason it decided I meant if "Moose" was in the house. Sad to say, but Moose became his nick-name.

I think when it comes to taking an IQ test, you should automatically LOOSE points for even TAKING the test.

Love hate here. Obviously given the typical length of the posts I can make I type fairly fast so having it flag my 'fat fingering' and dismal public education based spelling errors is nice but I can't stand the way it, too often, takes correctly used and spelled words then replaces them with some other word that does not fit the sentence or subject.

Yeah, I hate that too. Can't think of an example right now, but there are some terms we use regularly, which does not appear in the standard lexicon. When that happens I sometimes right click the word it thinks is misspelled and tell it to learn the spelling. Trouble with that is I may actually misspell something and it thinks I want it that way.

One word I've used (instead of the F word) was phuck. For the longest time it would auto-correct and put "puck". I had to tell it to learn the spelling. But if ever I want to type the word "Puck" and misspell it with the "H" it will think that's a correctly spelled word.

I have that same issue thanks to whatever idiot designed the spell check interface to have the 'add word' button right next to the correct word selection.

I wish there was a way to undo a wrong word and remove it from the spellcheck system but so far no one has ever given me a workable solution on how to do that. All I need is a explanation as to where to find the spellcheck dictionary so I can go in an delete misspelled words or old words that are not commonly used so that they don't get substituted.

This is the closest I have gotten but my words I want to get rid of don't seem to show up in the lists it gives.

I used to know how to delete from the custom dictionary on Windows, but now I fly a Mac. I like Mac better but I've never found (or looked for) a custom dictionary to edit. I'm sure you can find something on YouTube.

I certainly agree with that. I try to give kids as much leeway as possible, consistent with their own safety and the rules of civility. Attaching consequences to prior choices and actions is huge, even for adults. Kids these days are struggling with risk management as they get older because they have so little experience when they're little. Their parents have acted as if they should not experience risk. It's damn dangerous to postpone learning about risk until you're driving, drinking, whatever. Better to learn it early when the consequences are less severe.
The example I've used for decades is that when they ride a bike we insist that they wear helmets and knee pads and elbow pads and all kinds of other safety equipment. Same when they ride a skateboard or go roller skating. But then, when they turn sixteen and get turned loose behind the wheel of a ton or two of Detroit iron (outdated reference, admittedly, but it makes the point a bit more strongly that saying a ton of Asian plastic) we somehow expect them to exercise good judgment and risk assessment.

I don't even need to post this. You know my opinion. The nanny state is off the rails and I prefer Darwin to be at the helm.

If it's any consolation, I assure you that Darwin remains steady at the helm whether or not the nanny-state gets involved. ;)

Just right-click
Wasn't referring to learning a word I was talking about how to access the custom dictionary and delete words you want to remove from the custom list. Words like "Conflatuations". You may have clicked "Learn spelling" and now it's forever in your dictionary, so that if you ever write that word again the dictionary won't try to change it to "Congratulations" (as it would otherwise). If I want to delete that word from the custom dictionary - THAT is what "TCMTECH" and I were talking about.

Actually that might be a good question to ask in an IQ test: "How do you delete words from your custom dictionary?"

Ah, OK, that's easy too.

Your custom dictionary is at Users/You/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary. It's just a text file and easily edited. Mine is empty, so don't be surprised by how little there is. It's only the customizations you've made. Your Library directory is normally hidden. The easiest way to get to it is, in Finder, hold down the Option button and select "Go" from the menu. Toggling the option button will make Library appear and disappear from the list of menu options there.

The system-wide dictionary is a little trickier and you need to be a little more careful about editing a System file. It's also hidden, at YourHDname/usr/share/dict/words. On my system, this is an alias pointing to the file web2 in the same location. If you want to edit any System file, you should always make a copy first and edit that. Then rename the original to, say web2XX, before renaming the edited copy to the original name, web2 in this case.

I've got a number of relatives whose mere -- and continued -- existence constitutes compelling evidence to the contrary. ;)
Darwin is a statistical filter, not an absolute one. Your extant relatives got through one round but over the long haul, the filter will get them, or their progeny. That or the movie Idiocracy is a best estimator. Darwin will outlive democracy, the nanny state and us. The problem of course is we still have to put up with those relatives in the here and now. Bummer!

You must be referring to some other operating systems than windows because I have no such file in that location.

In fact a general search for files by keyword for my whole computer doesn't turn up any library files. The only spell check library I have access to is with the link I Posted earlier and the misspelled words I have the most issues with are not there either. :(

I have a load of names and correctly spelled words in it though, which makes limited sense for a custom word file. At least a hundred plus now.

Yes, Tony asked about Mac OS.

I'm not sure about Windows, but in Mac OS, many system and hidden files are not searched and you cannot find them with a simple "Find".
