If there are no dumb questions then what is IoT

Do you know how the HAL 9000 got its name?
I hear an interview with Kuberic years ago about that. He had asked IBM if he could use their name in the movie. After reading the script and seeing the rogue computer, they said "Hell, no!". Kuberic still needed to name his computer, so he DID subtract 1 letter from IBM to get HAL. It worked out well, because now the computer had a name that the crew could use to talk to it - I mean, the name is right there - HAL 9000!

IoT = A way to take mature commodity products, add useless features that add no real value, to allow the marketing teams to hype and confuse the customer base into thinking they must be missing something while allowing for corporations to collect behavioral data, create personality profiles useful for manipulating your political and consumer behaviors, while enabling Chinese hackers to create massive DDOS botnets while filling up landfills while wasting your time as you wait for the software to update, preventing you from entering your own house.

Actually... Just bought a very expensive (for me at least) LG dual oven w/ glass stovetop range that the wife wanted and a dishwasher. And yes they have IoT. My old appliance repair guy says no way in hell will he even touch it. There is an app for the smartphone to talk to it. NO you cannot initiate anything on the units but after setting up the activity to be performed it can wait to be started remotely and send notice that the task has completed. All of their diagnostics are accessed by the phone app. Haven't tried it yet, still on the to-do list.

@MrChips Knew HiFi from when I was a kid. Parents had a console stereo - BIG son of a gun thing. WiFi just made sense. LiFi? Never heard of it. Can't imagine what it might refer to.

IoT - Jargon developed by media because they wanted to resell the old as new, and upsell the simple as the complex for a higher price. A newer generation reinvents the wheel, but calls it something else so it seems new, when it isn't. Don't be fooled. :)
