Identify this component

I opened up this circuit board and found this component had exploded. It’s off a lorry 24 volt dc where it had a problem with alternator overcharging. I had another circuit board where I removed the component but it seems to be smaller than the original. All I had left of the original part was the base which I removed so was able to compare sizes

What was the component on the other board?

The component designator would indicate that it's an inductor.

The picture of the bottom of the component wasn't helpful.

Yes it says L2 on the board where it is soldered to. Is that what means it’s an inductor? The component on the other board is in the first picture. I removed it from the board but not sure what it is. No numbers on it

On many SMD (Surface Mount Device) components, the numbers are laser engraved and can be all but invisible. You can reveal the numbers by filling them with something that contrasts with the black plastic.

For example, you can use correction fluid if you have some, paint the top than wipe it off completely right away. The fluid will fill the numbers and make them visible.

Alternatively, white or bright chalk used the same way will work. In any case, a component like that is rarely unmarked. The top side probably has something on it that you can't see.
