How's the weather?

The two day break is over -- we've picked up nearly another foot in the last few hours. So in the uncleared areas we've now got about three feet.

Yesterday, I accomplished walking my, "usual" mile for the first time in nearly 8 months. This is both a statement about weather and my injury of last July. It's so nice to stroll along in the night, getting my exercise!

65F (at night) to 85F (in the day) all this week. For Florida people, that is excellent weather. :)
A couple of weeks ago, it was 108F in my parked car. Today, it was 130F in my car. Time to fix the air conditioner!

For the following weeks, down here we'll be getting temperatures averaging 21°C (70°) which is simply perfect weather, at least for me.
And after months and months... it has finally stopped raining so much. Rain season this year has been unprecedented. Houses have been very affected with moisture and mold. Up in the mountains there have been frequent landslides, though nothing catastrophic, thank God. Also, no sinkholes have ever happened here either.
Spring is finally here... and BBQ season is about to get started!

Heading to the Gulf Coast at the end on the month! Warm sunshine, emerald waters, large plates of seafood and buckets full of beer. Can't wait.

Ok...so now I am really gonna rub it in.

Spent the day at Ft. Lauderdale beach with the kids. Again, the weather this week is absolute perfection. Snorkeled, built sand castles, and threw the football around. Here's a peek:

I think today needs a theme song. Here is an all-time favorite opus:

Hey, I have been to Ft. Lauderdale. Was there on business and spent the afternoon flying my sailplane. The highest spot was a garbage dump.

I was told it was the highest elevation in all of Florida (unconfirmed). Despite the smell, vent pipes obstructing landing approaches, and vultures, it was great slope flying. One pilot lost his airplane in the confusion. The item in the air he "thought" he was controlling was a vulture. He never found his airplane. :)

A sailplane? In Florida? The geography, landfills not withstanding, doesn't exactly support significant thermals AFAIK.

Must've been a constant decreasing-altitude glide path...

Edit: Or you were climbing over burning methane....

Actually, the style I was flying is called slope soaring. A slope properly aligned to the prevailing wind creates tremendous updrafts. On the lee side of the slope, there is an equally strong down draft ("rotor"). Imagine a wave cresting and crashing. You need to stay out of the downdraft, unless you are landing or doing "dynamic" soaring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_soaring) . The world speed record for models of any type (>300 mph) was done by a sailplane in dynamic soaring conditions. It is like trying to control a bullet you cannot really see.

The land fill was positioned so we had a strong off shore breeze. It takes a little nerve to just toss a $1000+ model off a cliff. Once you have done it a couple of times, your confidence builds. The cliffs in Del Mar California are similarly aligned with the wind. There, even full scale sailplane pilots launch off the cliff.
