Publication Misprint: I stated that Asteroid 2018 VP1 would approach within 4700 feet on November 2. This is incorrect. The actual estimate is 4700 miles. As previously stated, there is a slight chance that it will be pulled in by Earth's gravity with a 1 in 240 odds of striking our planet. Handling the Hurricane here, so sorry for the error. Steve

Comment: 1 in 240? I was going to renew a magazine subscription next month so I could get a good summary of the election results but now maybe I will wait until November 2 to see what happens.

 

@4700 feet I'd have to duck, And it would hit the Rocky Mountains. They stand way higher than 4700 feet. Could look it up - but - - - . Superfluous info I suppose. But even 4700 miles - that's damned close. In feet that would be 24,816,000 foot altitude. In astronomical terms - even that is a small number.

Not bad for us. Since Harvey we've moved about an hour north of Houston proper and just got some rain off the first rain band that she threw before coming ashore. Virtually no rainfall in Houston proper. Galveston was not hit too bad, not much damage. It looks like most people in Beaumont and the target area got out of the way. One death AFAIK from a tree falling into a house and the expected wind damage. Unlike Harvey which stalled and pumped 4.5 feet of rain onto Houston, Laura moved through pretty fast. As bad as she was, it looks like the early precautions and evacuations plus a little luck paid off. Lessons learned.

September is making up for August. Temp currently 95F with heat index 111F. Take that along with the usual afternoon Thunder Showers and it is HOT and HUMID! So hot they are putting out heat alerts from the weather service. In fact, the record high for today was 93F so this is worse than it has ever been!
