A sound amplifier uses its AC sounds input to modulate its DC power supply voltage. If the power supply voltage is positive and negative then the output of the amplifier is AC that can directly drive a speaker. If the power supply voltage is only positive then a coupling capacitor can block the DC but pass the AC from the amplifier output to the speaker.

6V RMS is 6 x 2 x pi= 17V peak-to-peak that an amplifier with an 18VDC supply might not be able to produce due to losses. The power supply might need to be 20VDC for the amplifier to produce an output that is 6V RMS. 6V RMS into an 8 ohm speaker is a power of only 4.5W.
