Googling "peak detector" brings up any number of circuits, by the way.

By software I mean the program (code) the PIC is running. You can use any compiler/programmer you have to program the PIC.

You convert the voltages from the peak detectors on a continuous basis. The conversion with the highest value is from the channel with the loudest input.
