I'm looking into building a device similar to an Easy Button: a battery-powered device that stores several audio recordings and when prompted by the user (a button is pressed), uses a simple logic to select a recording and play it back.

I studied computer science, but have almost no experience building electronics. I'm hoping for some pointers on what components I need, where I can buy them (in San Diego), and where to start.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can start with the programming. You need an MCU and an external memory to record the wav files. The MCU has to be designed for audio purposes.
