Homemade FM Antenna

I like to sit on my back deck in the evening with a drink and listen to a favorite radio program.
The reception was poor and seemed to come and go..
I had put a piece of wire about 6 ft. long attached to the FM antenna lug on the back of my stereo...and I have to move it around to get reception from time to time...it's never solid.
So I copied a youtube video on the subject.
I took a piece of 2" dia. pvc about 3 ft. long and wrapped it spirally with a single speaker wire ...leaving about a 1/2 " gap between the wraps.
I anchored the wraps down with a small dab of hot glue every now and then to keep the wraps on the pvc.
I hooked it up to my radio and the signal seems to be stronger and the reception locks in better.
Am I on the right track?
Will the glue act as an insulator somehow ( I put a dab about every 2 inches or so all around the spirals to hold the wire down)....and affect the antenna?
Thanks for the advice/expertise.
