If the part you bought from Malpin is not marked "X2", you should not use it because it could pose a fire or other safety hazard.

Both are fine but i'd go with 5W-6W one.

 

That 3 watt resistor should work, but I recognize it as a prime example of something that is designed to run hot. The resistor survives, but it can slowly cause cracks in the solder joints. If you choose that one, leave the legs a bit long so it stands clear of the board by maybe 6 mm to 10 mm.

The 5 watt resistor is a shoe-in. If it will fit the holes in the board, go for it.

 

Hello All,

I bought a 56 Ohm 5W resistor which was considerably bigger and longer than the one it replaced. Luckily the wires were very long so by bending one wire back on itself I fitted the new resistor on the board.

This was very encouraging. The motor ran smoothly and fast.

However, the results are intermittent. Sometimes nothing happens when I switch on the motor. Other times when I switch on it is as if the motor is labouring then the motor springs into life, then the motor slows down then stops. Sometimes the motor turns very slightly when I switch on then the motor stops before being switched off. There is no pattern to the behaviour of the motor. I have taken off the belt to reduce the load on the motor and this has no effect on whether the motor turns or not.

Any idea of which other component may be flaky?

Take a multimeter and check the current going into the motor.

 

Sorry for the naive question, but I guess I have to detach one of the leads from the motor and put the multimeter in series? (I did only a little circuit theory 30 years ago).

Hello All,

I got around to trying to measure the voltage.

Two problems. Occasionally the motor runs freely. I wasn't set up to measure when this happened.

Most of the time the motor when the power is switched on the motor does not turn or sounds as if it straining to turn.

Hopefully in the linked video file you can hear the "buzzing" and see the occasional spin of the motor

When I tried to measure the voltage across these points setting the multimeter to AC voltage , the meter showed zero when the switch was on that should result in the motor turning.
