How much does it cost to do a patent nowadays?
Generally more than I could afford if I didn't write them myself. I have an attorney who fills in the legalese and files the forms. When's all said and done, around $15,000.

This particular patent was a bear, though. All of my claims were initially rejected out of the box by the examiner. I had to write a 40 page defense of each of my 20 claims, against 6 pieces of cited prior art. Then the attorney had to repackage all of that into a proper response, in addition to supplementing it with pertinent case law. I think all told I'm in for $25K-$30K, including the $1,000 publishing fee that you have to pay once the claims are allowed.

I got all 20 claims allowed, though. Made my day!
