I would think 8mm or so nylon would work as it is pretty tough stuff. I liked it because it was easy to work with for things like mill and drill. We used it to build quite a few fixtures which took a lot of strain force and 1/4" stuff was hard to bend.In your opinion how thick should I go with nylon? I would think the shaft would not be more than 5-6 inches long.
Roller skate bearings are pretty popular and cheap. The are 8mm inside.

Would 8mm be thick enough to prevent sagging or bending? I do plan to set the bearings in a wooden block or two.
Edit: I am thinking of going with a tube, that way I can run the wires inside the tube.
