FCI (aka AMP) produces a connector called "Clincher." It is listed as an IDC type for FFC or maybe even FPC cable. Unfortunately, documentation specific to how to use it seems to be missing -- at least the appropriately named link has been down for awhile. Both DigiKey and tech service chat at FCI link to conventional, not IDC, connectors.

Does anyone know whether insulation from one side of the FPC cable needs to be removed? My strong suspicion is "no," but I have not been able to find a definitive statement to that effect. The product is listed as an IDC connector, and the advertising splash describes the electrical contacts as "air tight," which I interpret as supporting that suspicion.

I did buy a few of the female connectors and some FPC of the appropriate dimensions. My last option is to just try it. However, it may be one-time use on the connector for clamping the cable, which costs more than the PIC I will be using. ;)

If it works as I hope it does, it is a nice solution for a not infrequent problem.

John
