I'm looking for motor winding varnish in a small quantity for a repair job on a power tool motor but nothing is available locally, can I use a substitute like epoxy resin or a more easy to find varnish ?

If I have to buy a full can of insulating varnish I will never use it.

This stator is good but the wrapping on the exposed ends of the windings has crumbled with age , my view is that it was wrapped by Makita for a reason so I should replace it because I have all the time I want to do this job properly.

One important consideration is disrupting the balance of the rotor. So you need to be careful about even application. There is also "electrical insulating varnish that I have seen in one or 2 oz bottles, used for just such repairs, and to prevent corona discharge in high voltage circuits.

Consider that the reason to tape armature windings is to hold them in place because they are not wound tight, it will take quite a bit of varnish to do an adequate holding job. So IF the smallest can is found, a lot of it would be used. But a whole quart can will indeed be way to much.
There is a product called "GLYPTOL" that is available in smaller bottles, and it should work.

I got the impression it is the stator that the OP is worried about !!?

Clear fingernail polish. I am also seeing plenty of 2 oz and 4 oz bottles online with a Google of "insulating varnish". I like the GC brand but there is plenty to choose from. Amazon among others have it.
