The schematic is not very legible!
You could also take the com end shield back to see inside, as to what type of fields it has, and also details of the connections.

The story ends with, I hooked it up to power and it works. I dont understand why after looking things over but it does. Thanks for all the suggestions

OK, here is a repeat of my guess: The motor may be shunt or series, using a similar connection scheme, with one lead for the field plus the other end of the field connected to the body of the motor (Common negative, sort of verified by the two battery negative wires on the control box. The two remaining wires from the motor go to the two brushes. Two of the four SPNO contactors in the control box connect one or the other brush to positive, while the other two contactors connect the other brush to either the field lead.
Since that leaves no contactor to switch the field power on, it seems to me that it has to be a series arrangement.

No-load runaway would not be an issue because it is a winch, locally operated manually with spring return to off control.
