I think most democracies will revert quickly back to the old rule of law because the current rules are costing tax money but there are some pretty cruel examples of overzealous usage of Pandemic power.

Not really picking on Australia, my wife's sister lives in Queensland so I hear about these stories.
Yep, it's pretty Orwellian in the Land Down Under right now. Arresting a pregnant woman for a Facebook post:

Same land where they gave up their rights to have a gun. Looks to be working out well for them. Gee, up here in the US when Facebook dislikes your post they simply remove them. So are those real police or just Facebook police? :)

What I gathered is that he said that things won't go back to normal till then...
Also, to compare, it took forty years for the vaccine to eliminate the virus in North America. Not meaning to imply a Covid vaccine will take that long, but I believe that it will take more than six to nine months for things to “return to normal”.

I think this is sad. Humans are, by nature, gregarious. Our current crop of youngsters are not going to develop well.

And I thought the millenials were about as screwed up as possible.

Hold my beer.
We'll be back to normal in less than a year... you'll see.

Question is, how can this kind of crisis be prevented from ever happening again?

The fact that it happened this time and happened to the extent it has leaves me no question if it can happen again and sadly how easily it can happen again. What also scared me is just how poor the leadership in many of our US states actually is.

Medically maybe but the financial hit from this will last at lot longer. The leisure, travel and restaurant sectors have been murdered worldwide and huge numbers of jobs from closed, bankrupt businesses that occupied a large amount of office spaces are gone forever. Personal and business taxes have been slashed worldwide while countries are printing money nonstop as a temporary substitute for lock-down losses. I expect to see a global depression-like shock (hopefully without a real global depression) once the medical emergency is mainly done.

Agreed with all of that... but there were (and are being) lessons learned from all of this. Unless I'm being foolishly optimistic here. But it's not in human nature to sit idle when the going gets tough.

Things will get back to normal. The real question is, how long it's gonna take.

What scares me is how unbelievable hard it's been for countries to try and work together to bring this thing under control. Everyone is (naturally) protecting their own interests, and in doing so we're allowing more harm than needed unto ourselves on a global scale.

Economically speaking, saying "I come first" can make sense. Competition is a good thing in that context. But applying the same way of thinking to humanity's health and well being is not only idiotic, but self-destructive.
