As was expected, we are seeing a possible mutation to weaker strains like in the last SARS spread.

Like SARS -CoV, the SARS -CoV -2 genome encodes multiple open reading frames in the 3' 53 region. We found that the SARS -CoV -2 AZ -ASU2923 genome has a n 81 nucleotide deletion in 54 the ORF7a gene resulting in a 27 amino -acid in -frame deletion (Figure 2B ). The SARS -CoV 55 ORF7a ortholog is a viral antagonist of host restriction factor BST -2/Tetherin and induces 56 apoptosis (11 -14) . Based on the SARS -CoV ORF7a structure (15), the 27 -aa deletion in SARS - 57 CoV -2 ORF7a maps to the putative signal peptide (partial) and first two beta strands. To 58 validate the deletion, we performed RT -PCR using primers spanning the region and verified by 59 Sanger sequencing the amplicons (Figure 2C). Similar deletions in SARS -CoV -2 genomes are 60 emerging, notably in the ORF8 gene (16) that may potentially reduce virus fitness (17). Hence, 61 further experiments are needed to determine the functional consequences of the ORF7a 62 deletion. 63 Collectively, although global NGS efforts indicate that SARS -CoV -2 genomes are relatively 64 stable, dynamic mutations can be selected in symptomatic individuals.

"One of the reasons why this mutation is of interest is because it mirrors a large deletion that arose in the 2003 SARS outbreak," said Lim, an assistant professor at ASU's Biodesign Institute. During the middle and late phases of the SARS epidemic, SARS-CoV accumulated mutations that attenuated the virus. Scientists believe that a weakened virus that causes less severe disease may have a selective advantage if it is able to spread efficiently through populations by people who are infected unknowingly.
Vaccines are targeting the spike protein which doesn't change.

I can understand that since Japan has no natural resources and wanted natural resources the best way to get them was gobble up everything in the Pacific. I just can't buy that China intentionally released this in the wild. Someone owes me money I am not going to break their legs so they can't work. Then too, my uncle Guido looks at it differently and would break the legs of those who owe him.

I cannot believe it was released on purpose either. While I keep an open mind as to what role subculture in human cell lines affected its infectivity and whether that was done on purpose, I simply cannot imagine it was released on purpose.

That lab was a disaster for maintaining level 4 BSL (the highest level of biosafety level lab), but nothing was done about it. Many years ago when I was in the trade, I shared a cab ride with a colleague at the CDC. Two techs in their BSL4 lab had acquired Rickettesia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickettsia) and had died. Same issue. No objective third party inspects Federal labs. That information was largely quashed in American media. It is not surprising the same sloppiness exists in China.

I can sum it up in a single word, scary.

So is it starting to look like a duck after all? There has been quite a bit of high-level quibbling on both sides of that fence. I don't think we have a definitive answer as yet and may never truly know exactly what happened.

As usual I believe if there was one iota of credible evidence the US had it would have leaked months ago because blaming the "fill in the blank country" is obviously a good way to hide incompetence.

Hello again,

My best guess is that it was being studied by the lab, then some under educated lab tech unknowingly carried it out into the marketplace and infected people there, then it spread all over the globe. From what i understand this is not the first time this happened either.
Also from what i was told problems like this came out of China in the very distant past too (like several hundred years ago) before they even had labs. Back then I think it was because of the eating/cooking/slaughtering/selling of live animals combined with poor sanitation habits.

The really bad news is that i hear now that there is a stronger strain of the virus coming out of Europe where it must have already mutated. I am the opposite of a fear monger but it sounds really bad.

Shulepov, 37, was admitted to the hospital more than a week before the accident after testing positive for coronavirus. That day, colleague Alexander Kosyakin posted a video on social media of himself and Shulepov complaining about protective equipment shortages. In the video, Shulepov said he was being forced to finish his ambulance shift despite being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Five days later, local health officials shared another video of Shulepov on social media in which he retracted his earlier complaints, saying he was just being emotional.

Five days later, Shulepov fell out of a two-story hospital building. The cause of the accident remains unknown. Some local media suggested he was merely attempting to smoke on a window sill, while others reported that Shulepov was under a lot of pressure for publicly complaining.

I think there is no need to panic anytime during the quarantine days you should avoid contact and use mask if you are going outside. Even after this pandemic is over we need social distancing to avoid further spread in case there's any virus out there. Till then keep practicing as much as you can.

Yes that sounds good.

I had to make an appointment to go to the bank yesterday so i could go today.
I got there at 9:50am and the appointment was for 10:00am so they made me wait in the ATM area for 10 minutes where i had to observe "social distancing" :)

I wanted to make a deposit, and using the drive up window they require that you give them your license and if the shoot you put your stuff in gets stuck you cant legally drive away because it is illegal to drive when you lost your license, i checked.
I actually had this happen one time at a different bank cashing a pay check. It got stuck and i had to wait several days to get it back and cashed/deposited.

All the state shutdowns were designed to slow the spread of infection so that emergency rooms and ICUs weren't overrun beyond their capacity. Considering that there is no stopping the virus, a majority needs to get it in order to achieve herd immunity, doesn't it make sense to optimize the infection rate such that ER/ICU is utilized at something like 75%? I suppose an argument against this is that given more time, better treatments may be derived. Of course, I don't personally know how backed up ERs and ICUs are or have been through this.

They could shoot you and then put you down the garbage chute.

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

Good one ... but are you sure you intended to post it in this thread?

Correct thread, emphasizing the difference between chute vs shoot, both pronounced the same way,
and shoot and leaves have other meanings as well.
