**** REPOST ****

My original post was deleted because a mod though I was making fun of Mexico's president. I am not.

Mods: This is not a political post but a scientific one.

Mexico as asking their population to continue life as normal, unlike almost every place else where the population is asked to social-distance or shelter-in-place.

If Mexico continues this policy, it will make an interesting contrast to the policy implementations of the rest of the world, and will help us to understand if the shelter-in-place/social distancing policies improve the outcome (or limit the prevalence) of the virus. Consider them the control group.

This is important information, as we are currently risking the entirety of our economy on our policies -- with no actual knowledge of the costs/benefits of taking such an action.

In life, joey, most of the times, you take options, more or les informed or not.

I'd rather have control over my own choices... and not have them made by politicians or third parties.
Provided you make wise choices and consider the liberties of others. Particularly, the liberty to not be exposed to a virus by someone who thinks they have the right to run around spitting on every handle they see.

Had to drive into Cleveland today. The usual speed traps along I-480/US20/Ohio 10 were in full operation. Highway almost empty. Not a single State lottery place was closed. (That s probably biased sampling. I don't play the lottery, so the only ones I saw were at food markets and gas stations.) As usual, it seems all about money.

I am in a bit of a quandary. I have always been a strong supporter of individual rights but there are times when the needs of the masses outweigh the need for individual liberty. Now is one of those times. You're welcome to say what you want but when your individual actions have a negative impact on the many it is time to listen to reason. Now is NOT the time to "game the system" to do whatever you want and to hell with everyone else. It is out of hand and expecting everyone to do the right thing because they have the integrity and understanding that it is for our own individual personal benefit to do so isn't working. At this point, I would be amenable to the implementation of martial law. Words that I never thought I would ever utter.

In my town, which is usually clogged with traffic, the roads are now pretty empty. One might think that’s a good thing. But not so. The streets have become race tracks. The stop lights and signs are ignored. Traffic lights are also ignored. In normal times this would cause big pile ups, now it seems the one car rollover is preferred. I guess it’s people rushing to the next virus party. It’s hard for me to write how I feel about this, let’s just say I’m angry and disappointed in our society.

I went down into town yesterday for the first time in over a week. I was expecting to see store shelves even emptier than before and empty roads. Neither was the case. The traffic was definitely lighter, but still plenty of cars -- no where near as light as during the superbowl.

The stores still had sections of shelves that were empty, but I went to three stores and between them was able to get some version of everything on my list (fortunately, toilet paper and paper towels weren't on the list!). My first stop was Safeway and the last time I was there the produce section has about a half dozen cantaloupe and a small amount of just a few other things -- absolutely nothing I needed or was interested in. Yesterday the produce section was almost completely stocked with very fresh stuff (something that Safeway around here does not excel at). But other things they were completely out of. When I went to Sam's Club and then WalMart I found that there were items that each one had in fair abundance that the other two were out of. All three stores had a modest amount of milk, which surprised me. Of the things on my list, eggs were the hardest to find and I had to settle for one of the half dozen cartons of brown eggs at Safeway. The other thing that was in extreme short supply was butter (it wasn't on my list). Safeway was down to about eight one-pound packages of unsalted butter, but the other two were completely out. Had I known that I probably would have picked up a pound or two at Safeway. The cashier as Safeway said that people had been buying eggs and dairy products most of the day every day, so it appears that they are getting shipments in and that they are just selling out before the end of the day (was was there in late afternoon). The other very notable shortage was anything related to beef. No hamburger to be had (not on list, but only because of lack of freezer space) and the butcher said that it simply isn't coming in. Plenty of pork, chicken, and fish.

Everyone everywhere I went were calm and polite and taking things in stride. There was a lot more casual conversation between customers than usual -- we have something other than sports in common for a change. Plenty of observations and head shaking about why some items are flying of the shelves and others aren't, but really no bitching and complaining. I was quite pleased.

The prices don't seem to have been impacted at all -- they are running their normal schedule of sales (on both stuff they have plenty of stock of and stuff they are out of) and haven't increased the prices of the stuff in short stock.

Individual rights are in fact the cumulative rights of the masses and suspending civil liberties is like suspending the movement of atoms in an object. More people die in car wrecks every year than from corona virus, but the government hasn't suspended the right to drive.

Furthermore, the government's mandate for self quarantine and "social distancing" is seriously flawed reasoning. Unless you have everyone tested for Covid-19, how do you know who's been infected and know if the disease is being held in check or continuing to spread? A person can be infected and not develop any symptoms so how would that person know if it's safe to go out in public?

In order to issue an all clear proclamation and lift the restrictions, everyone would have to be tested. But without testing 100% of the population, the these wild goose chase restrictions could go on indefinitely.
