But all of that assumes that we can’t change, that the only two choices are millions of deaths or a wrecked society.

That’s not true. We can create a third path. We can decide to meet this challenge head-on. It is absolutely within our capacity to do so. We could develop tests that are fast, reliable, and ubiquitous. If we screen everyone, and do so regularly, we can let most people return to a more normal life. We can reopen schools and places where people gather. If we can be assured that the people who congregate aren’t infectious, they can socialize.

We can build health-care facilities that do rapid screening and care for people who are infected, apart from those who are not. This will prevent transmission from one sick person to another in hospitals and other health-care facilities. We can even commit to housing infected people apart from their healthy family members, to prevent transmission in households.
Some Americans are in denial, and others are feeling despair. Both sentiments are understandable. We all have a choice to make. We can look at the coming fire and let it burn. We can hunker down and hope to wait it out—or we can work together to get through it with as little damage as possible. This country has faced massive threats before and risen to the challenge; we can do it again. We just need to decide to make it happen.

Maybe I should unwatch this thread. People are walking a thin line. And I may not be able to continue to control myself.
You have no idea the amount of restraint that I've had to exercise during this conversation... and yet I still believe that we can pull it off and behave civil.

A sensible approach:

In order to protect the staff and customers of Ham Radio Outlet and to continue to operate in a safe manner HRO will be closed to walk in traffic at all locations effective 3/25/2020. Stores will continue to take phone calls, online orders, and ship product so long as we are legally allowed to operate. We encourage curb-side pickup where you may call in an order and then call into the store when you arrive at the facility. One of our staff will bring out the product to your vehicle.

Although I would simply place the prepaid package outside the door for pickup but that's picking a nit.

Very good news. Now we have a quick test of who is immune to the virus for a get out of jail card.

“To basically test if somebody has already had COVID-19,” Amanat said.

Such a test would facilitate research into the workings of the immune system in response to this new virus. It would also afford a fuller sense of how many people had been infected, including those who had not been symptomatic. That would provide for a more accurate measure of the infection rate.

And the test could identify those who might now have immunity.
Here we describe serological enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) that we developed using recombinant antigens derived from the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. These assays were developed with negative control samples representing pre-COVID 19 background immunity in the general population and samples from COVID19 patients. Results: The assays are sensitive and specific, allowing for screening and identification of COVID19 seroconverters using human plasma/serum as early as 3 days post symptom onset. Importantly, these assays do not require handling of infectious virus, can be adjusted to detect different antibody types and are amendable to scaling. Conclusion: Serological assays are of critical importance to determine seroprevalence in a given population, define previous exposure and identify highly reactive human donors for the generation of convalescent serum as therapeutic. Sensitive and specific identification of coronavirus SARS-Cov-2 antibody titers will also support screening of health care workers to identify those who are already immune and can be deployed to care for infected patients minimizing the risk of viral spread to colleagues and other patients.

I guess the next warning label to be put on products is to put the following warning:

Warning: This product does not prevent or cure CoVid19 or any other Corona Virus.

It may appear on products such as
Toilet Paper
Aquarium filters
Deodorant
Windshield Washer Fluid
Water Softener salts
Barbecue Brickettes
Sex Lubes
Feminine Napkins
Hair Dye
Dryer Lint
Naval Lint
Flux
Flux Cleaners
Silicone RTV
Motor Oil
Brake Fluid (though it might)
Bic Pen Ink
etc.

Boy, I should go into business printing warning labels. Hey! Someone has to protect the stupid from themselves.

I guess it should have been expected but fleeing to another location is happening. In my county (Contra Costa) the order explicitly requires remaining in your residence. But like my neighbor who has a vacation home in the mountains many have packed up and left. Those that live in the mountains (or beach) areas have rightfully complained about being impacted by disease carrying refugees. Without enforcing some kind of checkpoints along the highways there’s little that can be done about it.

On a slightly related note in 1665 Isaac Newton moved out of London to his family’s country house to escape the plague that was ravaging London. The next year most of London burned down. While “working from home” Newton invented calculus and gravity and inspired the Pink Floyd cover art with the prism creating a rainbow of colors.

So what are you doing with your time? For me, I’m thinking of ways to shame my neighbor for his illegal and cowardly response to this crisis.

Does this mean if I’m already immune that I could give blood for an infusion to help someone else if we are a match?

kv
No idea but I means you can be a health worker caring for the frail and elderly without special PPE for Coronavirus. You can't get it or spread it. The knowledge of who has this ability will be very valuable if we can flatten the curve and start to remove some restrictions on those that pass.

Human nature at its worse.

Brito said his pharmacy had about 800 tablets on Monday and were nearly sold out in about an hour. One doctor called and asked for 200 tablets, but the company refused. “He was a little upset about it but he understood and he went quickly from 200 to 42 tablets, which is essentially treating two people,” Brito said. “So yeah, they’re stockpiling it.”

A pharmacist in Houston, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation and violating patient privacy, said he was recently asked by a surgeon for an unusually large quantity with unlimited refills. “He said it was because his wife had lupus,” the pharmacist said, “but when I asked him for her name and diagnosis, he told me just to put it in his.”
