The "official" number is over a thousand now, but these are gamed figures, are they not?
You can count on an authoritarian regime to provide false information, assuming they give any at all.

It appears that two affected cities are burning corpses and the number would have to be in the thousands to account for the rise in sulfur being detected.

Does this indicate that novel-coronavirus as just another flu outbreak? Sheesh.

Massive disinfection cannons, dystopian nightmare:

With a death rate above 2%, coronavirus is nothing to take lightly. On the other hand, there's no point in being afraid to live your life.

It's embarassing for the Chinese government to be responsible for another virus that has jumped from animals to humans. Rather than being responsible and going public with the truth, they're covering it up and placing blame on lower level officials. Typical behavior of an autocratic regime.

This looks like my street during mosquito abatement. No way of telling whether this is specific to the Novel Corona Virus.

It might be that these diseases "jump" from animals to humans is that in China and Hong Kong (never noticed this happening in Taiwan) is because humans and animals live in close proximity and there are many chances for them to influence each other biologically. One thing the Chinese government could do is to require changes in the way animals are kept, transported, and slaughtered; that might reduce the frequency of this effect, which seems to happen every six to nine years.

Fogging the streets with 1-2% bleach solution (I assume) is probably about as effective as the paper masks we see. Not very. However, lots of upper respiratory irritation to go along with the coronavirus.

A solution of NaOCl (bleach) would not be my first guess for the pictures we see of widespread misting outdoors. Of course, indoors on a small area, bleach is quite effective.

Coronavirus is enveloped and some common "quat" (quaternary ammonium) disinfectants have been shown to be active against similar viruses. Of course, concentration, contact time, and matrix (i.e., Is the virus on an otherwise clean surface or mixed with something like blood o feces) affect disinfectant activity.

I share your doubts about the effectiveness of misting large areas, but I have not seen any descriptions of the details.

Would hydrogen peroxide also be a possibility?

Wouldn't everyone become blonde?
I lived in the Bay Area when they were spraying malathion to kill an infestation of fruit flies. They sprayed at night to minimize exposure for people.

One official took a gulp from a glass to "prove" it wasn't harmful to people. That was back in the days when people didn't lie as much, so I believed what he claimed. Don't know if it caused him any problems.
