From a news article about why our local school officials are not closing public schools:

"Among their chief concerns: the issues of inequity that would arise if children are expected to learn online from home, and the non-academic services like school lunch that families rely on."

Yesterday, the governor declared a state of emergency, banned gatherings of more than 250 people and closed the state house which is now in legislative session. He specifically stated K-12 schools would remain open. All higher education is closed. So, my son and daughter are supposed to keep going into a single building for five days a week with over 1,000 other kids. BTW, every kid has a Chromebook and is required to use it. Just, you know, not to keep my kids, my wife and myself from getting sick.

Edit: The prison system has implemented additional screening for incoming inmates and video based visitation. Nothing is being done for K-12 education.

Here in Ohio each school district made their own decisions but they were all going in different directions so the Governor solved the problem, he closed them all for the next 3 weeks and two of which were to be spring break.

I got the following this morning from my local casinos.

MGM Northfield Park
The health and safety of customers and employees comes first.

In compliance with the mass gathering directive issued by the Governor of Ohio, MGM Northfield Park will suspend operations and temporarily close at midnight, Friday, March 13th.
We will monitor this rapidly changing situation and will keep you informed as decisions are made on when we will reopen. All scheduled promotions and events will be postponed until further notice.

We look forward to welcoming you back to MGM Northfield Park soon.

Casinos never close but since the governor came out saying no gatherings of people exceeding 100 people that did it. They were remaining open. This nonsense is unending.

Got an Email from my sister who was in Polynesia this morning:

Captain just announced that Holland America has decided to suspend all its cruises, including those currently underway. What this means is that this cruise will be over when we reach Hilo on March 20.
I could hang around in Hawaii on my own, but since that doesn't hold much appeal, I think I'll just come home and plan a new trip for when this hysteria is over.
Meanwhile, I have to change my flight plans since I now have to fly home from Hawaii instead of San Diego.
Everyone is sad, but it is what it is.
Stay tuned.

Cindy

Holland America is making good on everything.

I suggested she grab as much toilet paper as she can off the boat, she will need it once she gets home. I have never seen so much nonsense disruption in all of my life. Just when you figure people can't get any stupider they surprise you.

My local is still open.
Dear Guest,

CASINO IS OPEN

Casino operations will remain open and smaller events such as Free Live Music on Fridays & Saturdays, and more, will continue as normal at this time.

This brings us to the question of the hour- what did people use for wiping before toilet paper?

What was popular depended greatly on region, personal preference, and wealth. Rich people often used hemp, lace, or wool; poor people, on the other hand, would often simply poop in rivers and clean off with water, rags, wood shavings, leaves, hay, rocks, sand, moss, sea weed, apple husks, seashells, ferns, and pretty much whatever else was at hand and cheap or free.

Public schools here are not closing. Reason? This is a very poor county and the kids would not have any government-subsidized meals to keep them from starving. I kid you not. I guess the "parents" don't feed them so it is up to the schools to keep them alive is the School Board's logic. The only requirement to run for office to be on the Board of Education is NONE! No education or brains required, just show up for meetings and get paid.

Finally a use for these million of birds that just won't leave.
Here in Ohio they are actually protected. I had one that would chase me every morning so one morning I MACED that SOB and got him good. Following that every morning when I took my usual path the sucker avoided me. He chased others but he knew me. Had one of my employees who needed to climb a back stairway on second shift to check boilers which involved a long outdoor stair climb of switch back steel stairs. Damn goose began going after employees in my charge. I called HR for the business park who informed me they were protected. I threatened legal action if any employee was hurt or fell avoiding them. I have no reservation with killing those filthy birds. HR began bringing in a goose chasing dog. I hate those birds.

Cleveland is free breakfast and lunch and it didn't stop them. Arrangements are made so they get their meals delivered. Maybe if people took responsibility for the kids they choose to have they would not have this problem.

Closing Public schools is something I would very reluctantly support for the reasons you detail and others. People need to work and finding large numbers of sitters now will be almost impossible. Health care (female nurses especially) and critical infrastructure workers need to be on the job.
There's little evidence that children are a major source of the spread.

It's not to protect the kids, it's to protect the staff and parents. Public schools in FL are closing until, at least, Easter. Other GA counties are closing public and private schools. Wife left EARLY this morning to grocery shop. So did everyone else. Meats almost sold out, long lines at the 3 open registers and no manager on duty yet to call in the help.

Spain is going off the grid.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-spain-lockdown-idUSKBN2110MK
MADRID (Reuters) - The Spanish government is to put the country under lockdown as part of its state of emergency measures meant to combat the coronavirus, several media including El Mundo and Cadena Ser reported on Saturday.

The government will say all Spaniards must stay home except to buy food or drugs, go to the hospital, go to work or other emergencies, El Mundo reported.

The paper reports Spain’s Interior Ministry will control all police forces, including local and regional ones, as part of the state of emergency.

Very valid point. Where would we be without infrastructure and available goods, like food? During Hurricane bugouts I was issued an ID Card that gave me the ability to return to the area, after it had been closed by mandatory evacuation, to maintain Plant Operations. I can see something like that being implemented for necessary services in the event of mandatory quarantine.

It's snowing here but spring weather will be here soon. Kids (older ones) are not going to stay locked inside a house for weeks or months. IMO it's better to have them in a officially controlled environment like daily school quarantine with proper PPE for staff and student testing during anything but the most restrictive quarantine when people are dropping dead on the streets.

The first human trials of a vaccine to fight coronavirus are set to begin within days, scientists have announced.

Healthy volunteers in the US will be given the new-generation “genetic hack” after it bypassed standard animal testing as part of a highly accelerated process.

If the candidate drug proves safe, it will then be tried on larger groups of patients infected with Covid-19 to test its efficacy.
