Is changing the supply voltage to a 12V, 80mm brushless fan effective and safe?
I am thinking mostly of reducing the speed.I would say probably not effective, and if you go above 12V, after certain threshold not safe either.
From google AI:According to me PWM is the way to go. But as I said, depending on your application, if you need to constantly reduce it for 15% maybe lower voltage would be OK. With PWM you can fine tune the speed with a potentiometer.
This discussion will lead my choice of fan.well if we only knew the actual fan...
Yes, and I understand why that is a good idea.Regardless of what you decide, I would first start the fan at full 12V, and after a couple of seconds reduce the voltage.
Below are some numbers for a 12 Volt 80mm typical fan:Is changing the supply voltage to a 12V, 80mm brushless fan effective and safe?
| VOLTAGE APPLIED (VOLTS) | CURRENT DRAW (mA) | FAN SPEED (RPM) |
| 12.078 | 157.4 | 2,739 |
| 9.013 | 115.2 | 2,139 |
| 6.025 | 75.0 | 1,460 |
| 3.011 | 31.3 | 114 to 125 |
