SORRY FOR DOUBLE POST! My computer keeps freezing or something. Almost happened earlier when posting about ESR.

here is the datasheet for STP9NK70ZFP

if not radioshack, anywhere else?

Ahh, that's a 700V 1 Ohm 7.5A MOSFET - Radio Shack only carries the IRF510, which is rated for far less voltage and less current.

Is this a replacement MOSFET for an existing circuit, or are you trying to design something?

With something that high voltage, I'd look at IBGT's.

Thats about all they do here too.

However, they have a few drawers stocked with a few dozen different parts.

741's, 555, 7805, 317, NPN-PNP bjts, 1 p-ch and 1 n-ch MOSFET, handfull of resistors/caps, plugs and jacks, audio recording (speech) and playback IC.

And they have started carrying Mr. Mims books again, as well as the 300 in 1 electronics lab, and 3 Velleman kits.

The whole area takes up a cubic yard. (Maybe a few feet taller)

its just another board i was messing with. i know it is blown though. but don't want to have to pay $9 shipping costs for one part that is only $2-$4.

so could i just get any n channel mosfet that is rated 700V 1 Ohm 7.5A MOSFET or higher?

Thanks for all of the feedback. I appreciate it

What part of Texas? In Carrolton (Dallas metroplex) we have some very good stores for electronics.

For that matter I could stuff one in an envelope and mail it. Can you use something like a IRF540?

voltage isn't above 700 V for IRF540. but i don't know. didn't want to pay any shipping charges. dallas to san antonio. how much would that run Bill_Marsden?

Bill,
The one our OP's inquiring about has a Vdss rating of 700V, Id=7.5A,Rds(on)=1 Ohm.
An IRF540 is only rated for Vdss of 100v.
Even those IRF730's I sent you are only rated for Vdss=400,Id=5.5A.

I don't have anything in my not-very-extensive MOSFET collection that would work either.

Your right, that is a very specific part. I was talking for free (one part, two stamps).

You might be able to find a TV shop that carries something similar. San Antonio is a fairly big city, there is a chance you can find a local retailer. Tanner's is a fair drive, 30 miles, but I go there weekly.

i will have to call them. ya i don't know if the part is messed up but i am pretty sure it is. have to put the bridge back in cause it still works. replace the shorted n channel mosfet, and check the voltages on the IC to verify. as i accidently touched two of the pins on the bridge rectifier while measuring the voltage. it sparked the bridge and a peice of the IC i am asking about came off. and i had to put the three black peices together to read what the part number was for the IC.

Since you saw a spark gap at the power entry point (the bridge), you'll want to follow the subsequent trances through the power conditioning circuitry and slightly beyond, looking for fusable links or traces. This is where a trace "necks down" to very small widths and acts as a rough fuse. It's sometimes required for some IEC/etc. certification. If you find one, just fix it with a blob of solder. There is sometimes a split, tinned pad beside it to make the fix easier for techs.
