A capacitor resists changes in voltage in the circuit it is attached to, by absorbing charge when the circuit voltage exceeds the capacitor voltage, and releasing charge when the capacitor voltage exceeds the circuit voltage. The amount of charge and the time it takes to move produces a current (charge per unit time) in and out of the capacitor. It's a little like a tiny, rechargeable battery in the circuit.
