Can a 13007 NPN transistor be used as a substitute for a 2n3055 in a flyback driver circuit?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to build a flyback driver circuit.I recently found I had a fly back transformer(SAMPO 47F13-0860A/47F13-0860A LCE CF1232) in my collection while cleaning up. I had previously salvaged most components from an old PC SMPS supply and I've two SBP13007-H1 NPN transistors and one Power MOSFET FS7KM-12 salvaged from it. Also I've a Motorola 2N6055 darlington pair NPN transistor in my possession.. I saw a few online videos and circuits where people where using 2N3055 driver circuits. Unfortunately I don't have a 2N3055 in my possession but I've the above mentioned three NPN transistors and a Power MOSFET. Can I just substitute the 2N3055 with 13007 or the 2N6055 transistors? Or going with the power MOSFET will be better(if possible since this is MOSFET)?
Thanks.

Note that the circuit with two transistors is not a flyback converter, so you would need a lot more turns on the secondary if everything else were similar.

Yes, you can use the SBP13007.
The 2N3055 is not really very good at high frequency switching, so not having any is not a disadvantage. The SBP13007 on the other hand is a very nice switching transistor that can withstand a collector voltage 10X that of the 2N3055. The 2N6055 is a Darllington and not well suited to your application. The SBP13007 is the best of the three.

The single transistor circuit a good candidate but there is no obvious way to limit the collector voltage. Do you want to make this for a particular application or do you just want to make a high voltage?

Thanks. So, I guess I'm good to go with the 13007 transistor. Not for any particular application right now, just wanted to make a high voltage supply( those with arcs). I have a dozen 555 ICs with me thought of doing it initially but just wanted to go with a simple transistor driver first then with the 555.

The 13007 has a 7A current rating whereas the 2n3055 rating is 15A. That may or may not matter for your application.
