Li-Po batteries have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles. As they age, the capacity diminishes. Discharging the battery will waste a charge cycle and if you discharge it much below 3V, your charger will not be able to re-charge it. If the capacity is too low, the solution is to buy a new battery.Hi

That trick is for nickel–cadmium batteries only, and it is best done by putting a low value resistor across the battery terminals.Hi
