As it's a 3A supply the increase to 4A isn't going to make much difference to the wires, or anything else really.

Say you set the current limit to 4A.
And you short circuit it. Then the 4A will be across the short. The CC setting will limit the current to 4A and decrease the voltage to almost 0V. If the wires cannot handle 4A, they will burn. If not it will stay that way until the chip heats up and blows. Unless the chip can handle that amount. If the input voltage is high then the power dissipation WILL be more.
They is no way around this unless you have fold back current limit. which is not easy to design into DC to DC converters. I do not think even what you have can be changed into fold back method. You might need to spend more for that kind of circuit.

The Module I showed can handle that kinda current if the input is in reasonable level and mounted on a heat sink.
And believe me when I say they say they can handle 5A, but that is for short term. I tried one and it blew when I try to draw 5A for too long.
