A McDonald’s located in Canada’s capital of Ottawa will be shutting its doors for good after years of criminal complaints and debauchery taking place at the fast food joint.

It wasn't the first time a franchise shut down in a neighborhood like that. They shut down the BK in Birmingham Al Northside because it was too dangerous to operate the franchise. A lot of stores in that area shut down and were abandoned. Even the hospital. I stopped at a local chain Jiffy Mart convenience store there and walked in and discovered that I was in a chain link fence cage with a cutout for a small counter. The guy behind the counter wearing a pistol asked me what I wanted and went to get it. All of the aisles in the store were arranged so the counter could be seen from anywhere in the store. I was completely flabbergasted! I never went back... Even their grocery store employed off-duty uniformed police officers and was still robbed weekly or someone in the parking lot assaulted and robbed. Amazing what drugs can do to an inner-city neighborhood. The wall of the local police substation had a huge mural with "Welcome to Fort Apache" above it. You could never tell if it was fireworks or gunfire but it was a daily occurrence.

 

I don't mean to start a philosophical discussion here, but rather than drugs, I think the problem is people's loss of purpose. That is, most petty criminals simply don't know what their lives are for, nor what to do with the time given them. So they take a physical-senses, hedonistic approach to their existence. And that always results in a bottomless pit. What drugs do is exacerbate the underlying cause.

Drugs take a smoldering match and turn it into a raging dumpster fire. Our state experiment with drug decriminalization has been a massive accelerator to horrible behaviors.

The things that all of this drug war nonsense have done is caused people being killed in the distribution chain and the drugs of choice getting stronger and more dangerous. If your going to jail for pot selling you might as well sell fentanyl or heroin that usually have a lower sentence.

I used to like to smoke some pot once in a while, but not today. The THC content has gotten so high(no pun intended) it's no longer fun doing it.

We don't have the traditional drug war here but the same thing is happening, not because of a drug war, it's because of the profit motive to sell death on the streets. The war on X is nonsense. They want to ban (as part of the drug war to nicotine) flavored tobacco here but it's OK to use fentanyl or heroin on the streets.

I know, Reagan era war on drugs was IMO misguided in many ways but the state experiment with almost total decriminalization is a local nightmare of drug addiction and homelessness. Good people are voting with their feet and moving the hell out.
