This Saturday morning at 9:30 am, our High Performance Computer successfully completed its calculation to 62'831'853'071'750 decimal places, hence an additional 12.8 trillion decimal digits of Pi have been discovered. Therefore a new world record for the most precise number of Pi has been set by team DAViS of Fachhochschule Graubünden.

The ten last known digits of Pi are: 7817924264

 

That's wonderful! So what is this high performance computer going to measure?There are no physically realistic calculations scientists ever perform for which it is necessary to include nearly as many decimal points.

Yours is an irrational question, about an irrational number...

 

One of the things I did when learning to program was to find prime numbers, starting with the obvious and very method then progessing to better algorithms and optimising the code. It was good coding pratice.

Pi to a ridiculous number of digits is just the same kind of thing for far more advanced programmers.
