@atferrari, I think you might find this story interesting. The cruelty of other people's apathy towards their own peers has never ceased to surprise me ... it's that kind of attitude "if it doesn't affect me, then it's not my problem" that I hate the most... complacency at its worst.

That ships captain would be on my list of people I need to have a good talking to, if you don't mind my saying so.

 

You know, I do appreciate your comments but what I don’t like about the internet is simply showing / quoting a movie. I likely have never seen that movie which is one thing but more than that it’s just lazy. If you want to make a point then at least put enough thought into it to be able to make a point. What I’m saying is that cut and paste is not discussion, it’s just, well, cut and paste.

@atferrari, I think you might find this story interesting. The cruelty of other people's apathy towards their own peers has never ceased to surprise me ... it's that kind of attitude "if it doesn't affect me, then it's not my problem" that I hate the most... complacency at its worst.

The horror stories of individuals or even complete crews abandoned jointly with their vessel always start with the disponent owner being unable (or not willing) to pay some amount to someone usually in the current port of call coming to the point of abandoning all.

The immediate consequence is that in most countries nobody takes charge of the situation because that means to pay for whatever is required to keep the vessel safely moored/anchored with minimum qualified crew as required in the safe manning certificate. Bunkers, medical care, fresh, provisions, fresh water, shore people to tend the lines, tugs...a long list.

Another, not frequent occurrence, is when the flag (that is the register) ceases to exist or does not recognize them anymore. We had the case of several fishing boats berthed in Buenos Aires when the Soviet Union collapsed. For a mix of reasons nobody took any decision about them and their crews for much more than two years. For starters nobody could swear what was their actual nationality. Go figure.

The sole case I know where the authorities took charge on the spot, was with one vessel of our flag in a port in The Netherlands where the current crew was appointed by the local authority to keep her safe until she was sold to cover all expenses including the last voyage salaries owed to them. I relieved the Ch. Officer when they came home, back in Buenos Aires. BTW, the best of all vessels I was in my career.

Ill treatment to seamen is a painful thing. Bad to suffer when you are alone in the middle of nowhere...

Personally, I like most, if not all, of the memes and pop movie references that Nsa posts. An image, and a situation quoted in its proper context can be humorously enlightening. And as he's just said, life's too short. Sometimes too short to elaborate on the obvious. So why not just cut and paste if that gets straight to the point?

I do understand that not everyone gets meme references to pop culture out their normal preferences, region or age group but this IS the Internet weird/off-topic area. I'm often baffled by modern meme's on personalities, and events I've never heard of in this thread.

WTF Google Ads?

Since 2005 I have paid Google tens of thousands of pounds to run ads on their system. In return they have wasted loads of my time with endless changes to the platform and arbitary and erroneous enforcement of their own policies. They feel less like a partner and more like an enemy.

I’m not too bothered about one ad being dissaproved. Especially during COVID, where almost no face-to-face events are happening anywhere in the world. But experience shows they will probably start disapproving many more over the next few weeks. I have clicked the link to appeal the disapproval. Hopefully, sometime in the next few weeks some under-paid, under-trained contractor, who might not speak great English, will re-approve the ad. But maybe not. Who can say in this opaque, Kafkaeaque, ‘computer says no’, outsourced world that we have collectively built for ourselves
