It's neither one, and is sort of in between; it's a Silicon Controlled Rectifier, also known as a thyristor. Here's a link to the datasheet. http://www.onsemi.com/pub_link/Collateral/2N5060-D.PDF

You should get in the habit of reading datasheets for the components that you use.

 

In general, a 2Nxxxx number is a transistor-like device and a 1Nxxxx number is a diode-like device.

If all else fails, use Google.

The 2N5060 is a "Senstive Gate Silicon Controlled Rectifier". You can snag the datasheet from the search results.

 

No magic in 2N 5060, any low power SCR could be used. Another 555 can give same result, or similar result.

 

Thumbnail of 555 version of output driver. Operation same as SCR, once triggered, BPR1 will sound untill power is cut. Pypassing of pin 5's in my openion in this ckt, is optiomal.ie not needed.

 

What a transformation. Only problem I see is that SW's are shorted, not too clear on origional, wide spaced pins are common on ea side.
Gumbo is with chicken & ham- should have used rattlesnake or gilla monster.

The switch is a minor problem and I dont know what size the OP is using. So I'll leave that to the OP to tackle. Otherwise it would be too easier for the OP.

I hope she shouldn't have any more troubles to make the circuit work.
