LED in N/O stayed on, they never switched. the yellow and green LEDs are yet to light.... I am starting to wonder if the relay if screwed... but i am not sure. everything else seems to be ok bar the LEDs

 

Never mind. I just found that both Leds have blown.....

 

Leds are now oscillating nicely. The LEDs I put in were new... But they blew... My guess is to much heat when I soldered them in. I am pretty novice at this stuff. I generally work with WIRES. I still have no Timer for the pump, I think the relay is caput which is thiesable since i took it off a previouse attempt that went really wrong

 

Ok, I rebuilt the circuit using all new parts and strip board. Got oscilation and leds flash, when i set up the recomended test though the leds connected to no and nc do not change? I have checked and checked and checked and can not for the life of me figure out whats going on...

 

Does the relay operate when it gets to the desired time, if not does the green led stay lit for the relay time period?

Relay does not operate nor does the led stay lit when the relay should switch

 

I swapped out the 4060 for one (from the same supplier) that I havent yet used. This one kept the green LED on permanently... Faulty... I am not sure how to test the other one for faults, but it oscilates and when I probe the chip to check for voltage at pin 5 (using this for testing) I get no voltage at all. I held it there for 3 mins in total and never got a thing, so I am going to go to halfords and get a new one from them just to be sure

 

Set the timer to the quickest delay, and monitor that output with your meter or led, if the output goes high then its working, and the problem is driving the relay, if you look at the circuit the diode from the output stops the clock oscillator, and the transistor discharges the reset capacitor to start the timer again.

Get the oscillator to work, then test the fist output, then connect the relay.

 

Timer oscillates perfectly. Pin 7 goes live after 30 seconds. Pin 5 which should go high after 60 seconds never goes high. I have tested this with volt meter at the 4060

Pin 7 goes high after 30 seconds and low after 30 seconds. Pin 5 never goes high.

 

What about the other outputs, do they change, pin 7 should change state every 30 seconds?

 

Pins 14 15 and 16 oscillate. Pin 5 doesn't go high nor does 6. Couldn't answer about the others at this moment as they are u tested

 

None of the other pins go live... Not sure what the heck to do...

 

Just had a chance for a few more tests and found that when the yellow LED turns off the second time I get a vary slight voltage spike at the reset pin? what could cause this?

If you what Q4 to turn on every 30 seconds then it should be on for 15sec and off for 15sec.
Those values on that schematic don't look right.
What value did you use for C3?

For Q4 to turn on every 30 seconds:
If C3 is 10uF, then R3+R4 should be 85.2k. R5 should be 10x(R3+R4)=850k (nearest value is 820k)

 

I followed the strip board in post 5. Just replicated that

 

ok, so after doing more checks, The pins go live, my 12V adapter was churning out 16v.... stupid thing, so now I am running off of a 9v battery. I was playing with it some more today and have found that all the pins do go live all accept for the pin that I am using to trigger the solenoid... so very annoying.

 

Ok, I now have this circuit working. I cleaned the board up for the third time to be safe and it still wasnt working, so I probed away with the multi meter and found (Due to an early mistake) that I had blown the transistor, I have now swapped this out and it works perfectly. Dialing in the 6 seconds was a little tuff because I unwitingly bought preset resistor that was none linear. Voltage raises fast at begining and hits near max about half way round. but I got it there. Just letting it run for a bit letting it click the relay make sure I am happy, then I can rig up the pump
