I watched several LIVE sites all night, to watch the stupidity go down.

 

Big deal. The same thing that has always happened in the past will happen again. People will get furloughed without pay and then, once the shut down is over, get paid for the days they were furloughed.

Congess, of course, will just simply get paid regardless -- and, in fairness, the 27th Amendment arguably requires that Congress critters (but not their staffs) continue to be paid even during a shut down. That may or may not be strictly true since a shutdown is not "passing a law" that affects congressional pay. But that is the conventional wisdom and even it is it, it would be a minor point for Congress to pass a law, to take effect following the next congressional elections, that says that Senators and Representatives shall forfeit all pay and benefits associated with periods during which the government does not have an operating budget in place. Personally, I would make it so that it has to be an actual, approved budget that has been signed by the President and not just an endless string of "continuing resolutions".

Passing a budget is arguably the single most central thing that Congress is responsible for -- if they can't do it then why the hell should they get paid a dime until they can?

 

The 27th ammendment does not require Congress get paid during a shutdown. If it's not a big deal that government employees not get paid, then it's not a big deal that congress not get paid. Either they stand on principle or they don't.
