I have already answered this question. It cost me nothing in parts, and 3 hours in time.

I do not agree that there is any such thing as a 'proper' type of supply for anything. There are appropriate and optimal solutions for problems, and initially the problem needs to be defined. Of course there are going to be common problems, and well-known common solutions, but no one should specify a 'proper' solution before they understand the problem.

In my case cost is an issue, so the first solution was a laptop supply which cost nothing in parts, and nothing in time. My next solution (which was an unregulated power supply, not a linear one) cost three hours. If this did not work my next solution might well have been an over-spec SMPS, costing perhaps 10GBP?

And I was answering your question to me. There is a difference between what is proper and recommended by most motor companies. And between what works most of the time, kind of. It's your project so I bow down to your expertise.

I bow down to your expertise...

I hasten to correct you - I have no expertise. That is what people like MaxHeadRoom have. What I have is a well-develped urge to save money, and I find that if I can gather just enough data from people who know things, I can get away without having to keep skilled specialists like car mechanics in business.... at least for some time....
