The motor won't care.:)
The next step is to try in on the T.M. controller!.
Max.
Do you see a connection on the board for a power cord?

Hehe, you guys that know wiring probably think I'm an idiot for doing this with my skill level. I have no choice though. My lathe is my everything. I am trying to make a living on it.

Hi,
The way i looked the motor spec:130v dc and the controller spec:dc9-60v 20amp.

The controller output driving the motor is not given the spec.

Can you give the model type and brand name of the controller in the picture shown

I realise I can't use the controller originally listed. I got a treadmill motor controller which I have given a link to a photo of. (#7)

So I have power to the board but how on earth do I configure the motor. i.e what gets plugged in to where? I tried different combinations to the various male connectors that are part of the board, no success. I know the motor works because I have tested it with a 18 volt re-chargeable drill battery.
My main concern is to get the motor spinning, then have a variable speed switch (potentiometer) in the circuit.

I appreciate all the help I've been offered thus far.

Thanks :)

Do you have a 5k or 10k pot wired to the 3 pin plug marked POT?
The AC cord connected and the motor.?
Max.

If you don't show an isolation transformer the thread may be shut down!
Max.

I don't know what the potentiometer I have is. I can get one, if you have a suggestion. The AC cord is connected (the hot and neutral wires, the ground is not). I have no idea how to connect the motor.

" isolation transformer" sounds like a major component. :(

Hey bud the variable speed motor I managed to get was a 220vdc one and I cant remember the other specs offhand.

But I do have the manual for the controller that I bought which shows where to connect the variable resistor and also the other connections including earthing the whole unit properly. There is a lot of voltage hanging around that unit so safety first.

It looks very much like yours but slightly different specs. If you like I can scan the manual for you? Let me know. I can probably post some pics.

I would have thought you would have gone for a reversible one?

Oh. And if you are going for a variable speed motor which could be controlled by PWM. Another step you might be interested in is converting it to CNC?

You can make the conversion very easily, and if you want just disconnect back to manual. Food for thought.

Although I converted a metal work lathe to CNC and have NEVER used it since I managed to thread a 2" rod and nut ha.

Here it is, my variable speed Wood Lathe using an old treadmill motor with it's controls:

As you can see in the second image I maintained the safety Kill Switch. You just never know...

That would be awesome if you have the chance to do that. I would love to see some pictures.

* Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it. *

Max, sorry for jumping in the middle of this post, but I have a question for you and not sure how to connect with you otherwise. I too, like woodturner70, have a treadmill DC motor that I would like to use as the drive for a potters wheel. It is a Johnson Integrated Drive, 1.75hp, 110VAC, rated at 90 volt/15 amp. Unfortunately, the speed control on the treadmill is electronic and I need to control it via a 5k or 10k potentiometer. I found a 6v-90v 15a PWM speed controller on EBay for a reasonable price, but it seems to my feeble electronic mind that I also need something to supply 110 voltage to the PWM, either from the treadmill motherboard or another device. Not sure you can or are willing to help, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I can send pictures of motherboard, etc., if needed.
