Will AA or AAA batteries work to replace onboard mempacs?

Have an older motherboard using 8031 cpu with 3.6vdc Varta coin-cell mempac backup. Have the room, would a 2 or 3 pack of AA or AAA batteries work instead of the board mount cell pac? Would it be better to go with NiMH or NiCad, or would Alk or heavy duty work?

Any battery can be used, but is it worth the bother putting in some high capacity battery?

The battery on most motherboards is only used when the board isn't powered. If it runs down, you have to set the time. The other important settings are non-volatile.
