Why someone use formula Vab = ΣE- ΣRI when calculating Vab?

Why someone when calculating Vab use formula
Vab = ΣE- ΣRI , and someone use
Vab = ΣRI - ΣE ,
and they both are following the same rule that E and I are positive when they are in same direction from A to B.
