The same could be said of the Universe. Stephen Hawking says, "No."....shouldn't it also have a goal?

I share the same thoughts. We touched on this in the religious thread but I never got a resolution out of it. Why does evolution have any will or goals at all? How can a natural process strive toward anything? Even "continuous improvement of life?"True... but then again, most scientists speak of evolution as if it had a will of its own... well, if it did, shouldn't it also have a goal? ... what's evolution aiming at? ... yeah, I can accept "the continuous improvement of life" answer... but continuous improvement towards what?
I don't think anyone claims it does, unless there are religious 'explanations' attached to it. Evolution is an inevitable result of interacting natural forces, as certain as gravity. Does anyone claim gravity strives towards a goal? I don't.Why does evolution have any will or goals at all? How can a natural process strive toward anything?
Here's my half serious opinion: gravity strives towards a black hole...I don't think anyone claims it does, unless there are religious 'explanations' attached to it. Sure it does.Does anyone claim gravity strives towards a goal? I don't.
Yet, the universe continues to expand at either a constant or slightly accelerated rate. Here's my half serious opinion: gravity strives towards a black hole...
He said strives, he didn’t say it does.Yet, the universe continues to expand at either a constant or slightly accelerated rate.
Kinda puts a hole in your theory.
In that case, gravity is a slacker. It's not striving hard enough. He said strives, he didn’t say it does.
Kind of like you striving for a goal, not all are successfully achieved.
True for all of us. I try but I just can’t manage to stay on your ignore list.In that case, gravity is a slacker. It's not striving hard enough.
You never were. Your offenses would have to be egregious and immoral -- I haven't seen that out of you yet.I try but I just can’t manage to stay on your ignore list.![]()
Ahhh...but what seeded that life? Or, is it "turtles all the way down"?I believe that life, in one form or another is abundant throughout the Universe and our Earth was seeded from outer Space.
That word again... purpose... this place is never boring...The primary purpose of any living organism, is self replication of its gene model.
Disagree. Then the primary form of reproduction would be asexual. The primary purpose of any living organism, is self replication of its gene model.

This is, of course, the primary goal of hard core feminists -- but they are a distinct minority.
I am simply afraid to ask for elaboration.I specifically dispute that theory. I’ve known some feminists that REALLY know what they want. And mixing genetic material was very high on their list of wants and needs.
That is a revealing response from a guy who has an alleged IQ of 150, so much for evolution.Ahhh...but what seeded that life? Or, is it "turtles all the way down"?
I'm a skeptic. I believe nothing at face value. There are enough holes in evolutionary theory to cast at least some doubt on the "big picture".That is a revealing response from a guy who has an alleged IQ of 150, so much for evolution.
Apparently one has to have that high of IQ to get the many things (philosophical, cultural and other) that comment alludes to and not take it to be a stupid person's comment made from ignorance of reality. That is a revealing response from a guy who has an alleged IQ of 150, so much for evolution.
Some are contesting the survival of the fittest theory and going with the survival of the luckiest concept which gives a far better explanation for how the multitude of less than adequately functional lifeforms we have now came to exist.I'm a skeptic.
