I thought I would ask for help with my whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator?

I live in the USA and last night my whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator started to make a loud Hum.

It was not shaking to the touch but I think it was making a loud Hum or Vibrating sound.

We could not pull it out to unplug it so we turned of the Circuit Breaker giving power to the Outlet.

After say 15 Seconds we put it back on and the sound did stop.

After I think 15 Seconds it started up with that sound again.

After say a few hours the sound got very low but it was still there.

Today when I got up the whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator was not making that sound.

Yes it is running and everything is cold.

The Ice Maker Broke a long time ago and never could be fixed.

I thought this may be the Compressor but like I say it has been over I would say 7. hours and it is not making that sound.

I really do not want to Pay for a new refrigerator right now.

Does anybody think they know what it was or if I should just Buy a new refrigerator?

The very first question is if it is still keeping the frozen section frozen and the cold section cold. Consider that in most refrigerators there are two devices with motors: one is the sealed compressor, and the other is the fan that blows the cold air from the cooling fins into the refrigeration compartment. One common problem is that if the defrost system does not completely defrost the cooling coils, the air passage becomes blocked, and it does not cool properly. The real solution is to repair the timer that operates the defrost system.
The temporary fix is to manually defrost it by switching the refrigerator off and having the door open for 24 hours, so that all of the ice build up melts. The temporary fix works well BUT will need to be repeated, possibly every few weeks.
The logistics of what to do with the food inside during that time is the big problem.
The repair of a timer based defrost system is simply to replace the failed timer. That is a simple fix that I have done for myself and for friends. The timer may cost as much as $50, and the labor is very simple.
The timer replacement can also be done by an HONEST qualified service person, for less than $200.
IF the refrigerator is one of those frost-free ones that defrosts only when it is needed, that can be a bit more involved.
I did repair one of those via emails, for a missionary in Thailand, about 15 years ago. The repair was simple but the diagnostics were not.

Yes the Cold Side is Cold and the Frozen Side is Frozen.

It is now all Day and it has worked ok.

I do not want to jump into getting it fixed if it does not need it.

If everything stays Cold and Frozen and it keeps working would a good guess be it is the Fan?

My very first guess is the need to defrost so that the ice can melt and drain away. If a pool of water appears beneath the refrigerator when you do a manual defrost like I have described already, then you will know what the problem was.
