When I got my new Win7 computer, I had it all set up in about an hour. Still trying to get Linux set up after working for weeks. Windows isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

 

Unfortunately, historically, often the case with many inventions/developments, the best does not always come out on top, MS had a lot of money thrown at it which drowned much of the competition, many were superior P.C's and operating systems.
The cream does not always float to the top, depends who's stirring the pot.

Maybe you were lucky not to have suffered the Nvidia update lockout, or perhaps the black screen of death, to whcih there is still no known solution other than full reinstallation of Windows.

This is what I am talking about. Nvidia releases drivers that are crap and it is somehow the fault of Windows. How is Windows meant to protect itself from this? Windows does quite well at protecting as much as it can, but it can only go so far. Which OS can you name (that runs on a PC) that does not crash?
(In saying all this and not having the issue myself, could you not boot into safemode and uninstall the drivers?)

What Microsoft would need to do is take Apple's approach. Limit the hardware and software to only tested and approved vendors. But then you would have people complaining that they can't install the latest <insert hardware here>. You just can't make everyone happy....

There are many tasks you cannot perform as an admin, without using elevated status.
The simplest is turning hibernation off - a highly recommended setting to make.

Hmm, I just turned my on and back off and did not get any prompts. I wounder what the difference is..

In particular I would be interested to learn what you did to turn hibernation on and off since the tab was removed from the control panel after XP.
As far as I know you need an elevated command prompt to achieve this in later versions.

Sure. I simply went to the advance settings in the power plan and set the hibanation timer to "Never".
However, to split hairs, it does not really disable hibanation, it only turns it off. However, I would think for most users this would be fine.
(I do aggree that you do need to have the cmd window running as admin to user powercfg).

Do you not also need to make some other setting in power plan so there is no conflict, eg making sure hibernation is not set as the default option on closing the lid?

 

Most of the complaints about Windows are issued by users, not professionals versed in programming and it is what we should expect.

Myself, just an user, I have lot of complaints too, believe me, and always called Microsoft trying to solve the issues (with less than good results, always).

But then, I wonder, where / what was doing that huge mass of qualified complainers at the time Guillermo Gates and his partner started to developed it? With the Monday's newspapers I can also say who won the elections.

Just posting few questions about starting, most of the warnings / reccommendations I got were about getting more powerful HW and beware of the learning curve.

I used to complaint a lot about the surprises that MPLAB by Microchip offered in their frequent new versions. Finally I gave up. I suspect that I could never change antyhing of it.

After complaining to Microsoft about the difficulties I face to find out who sells locally an original Windows, I could say I gave up too.

If a moderator decides to delete this mixed rant outright, I will not complaint either. Life is too short and time is one of the assest you cannot retrieve, no matter how hard you try.

 

I just ran into this problem where I was helping a friend out. If any XP users also are using Microsoft Security Essentials, note that it is no longer supported and no new downloads are available.

This can result in XP hanging! Security Essentials attempts to run, but it's database is no longer available. Windows appears to be running, but no programs can be started (including Windows Explorer and Task Manager). It becomes totally unresponsive.

The fix is to start in Safe Mode and disable the MSE service. Then, restart Windows normally. Sorry, I don't have XP here and don't remember the actual service name.

Getting out while the going is good is the mark of a smart man, and he's definitely that. But we're talking about the evil empire, not the founding emperor.

Most of the people I know are using old Windows, that was bought many years ago, even a decade ago. That's not good for a operating system company. And when they buy new computers people often buy direct fron Ebay/China etc, where the bundled operating system Win7/Win8 is probably not giving any money to M$ either, for obvious reasons.

And those not buying imported chinese cracked computers are probably buying Linux/Android devices etc. None of this scenario is good for M$.

I think the days when almost everyone's computer was subservient to one software company are almost over. It's been a dark part of history where almost everyone had no choice but to bow down to one company's anti-social, conspiring regime.

 

Problem is, the programs other people have to write have to run on something. Win8 is a disaster, true. But Win7 is pretty good, and MS has a reputation for alternating lemons with winners.

With 90% of the market share still belonging to M$ I would not hold your breath for a major change.

Well I have found Windows 2000 to be the least troublesome of the lot.
The W2K based DVD recorder I built nearly 15 years ago is still running strong, has never had a virus and only falls over occasionally when MathCad or Corel gets too much for it.
