What is the need for the resistor at the gate of the IGBT?

This is a switching circuit used for a switched reluctance motor.

At the right hand side, there's a 560 ohm resistor at the gate of the IGBT. I thought IGBT's had high impedance and therefore wouldn't need a resistor at the gate, so what is the need for that resistor is this type of circuit and why that value of resistor?

Also the 47μF capacitor at the right hand side. Why is that there, what is its function? Is it for harmonics or ripple or something?
