A large square wave usually drives an inverter. The output of the inverter is connected to a tank tuned to the desired resonant frequency. When the square wave input is low, current flows to the load. When the square wave is high, no current flows. The efficiency is RL/(RL+Ron), where Ron = resistance of the on transistor.
