For reasons I won't go into, we had a key in a lock box on our sun porch, not locked around a doorknob as it should be. The other day, we found the outer plastic casing of the lock box broken on the floor, and no lock box.
So someone who had attempted a break in was out there with a key that opens multiple doors. Not a comfortable feeling. So we had all the locks re-keyed that very day, and I ran out to Lowes to get a Ring floodlight security cam.
There was a junction box right where I wanted the camera, so that was good fortune. I made sure the power was off for the sun porch, and opened the j-box. I took off the wire nuts from a line and neutral pair. Just to be sure, I qickly touched the bare live to the box. Big spark! Good thing I didn’t just try to twist a new wire into it! Turns out the basement lights have a switch on the porch by the door and that goes through that same junction box. Is that legal? Two circuits in one junction box?
Anyway, I popped the other breaker and got the security cam installed and working, but now the basement lights were out.
I saved that for the next day. 2-way light circuit had a dimmer on the other switch so that was immediately suspect. Tested it and it was blown, so a new dimmer switch fixed it. Whew!
