They have auto darkening glasses - why not auto darkening contacts?! The thing with the glasses is that they take a few minutes to return to light when you walk into a dark room. I'd imagine contacts made the same way will respond the same way. Just might bring back the eye patch like Pirates used to wear. They wore them to keep one eye adjusted to the dark conditions down below deck. If they found themselves in a fight they had the advantage of flipping up an eye patch while the other guy was struggling to see in the dark.

I'm not sure if this is rhetorical, and I don't know 100%, but I'd imagine it was a way to have non-stale water (for flavor), and to help keep their water/fluid supply relatively clean (because alcohol). That's just a guess though, to be honest.

Actually, the newer plastic photo-sensitive lens adapts much faster. Plus, you can get them in various degrees of darkening. My old glasses took several minutes to fade out indoors, but I don't notice it at all with the newer plastic lenses. I just wish they could polarize as well.
