Why does'nt the following schematic work? Also, is it possible to use a zener instead? If so, how would I hook it up?

Voltage dividers only work for a constant load. The current draw of the 8051 varies moment to moment. Use a voltage regulator like a 7805 instead. Google the number and get a data sheet to see how to use one. With a 10 volt source, you may need to mount it on a heat sink to keep heat down.
