I see the issue. You are confusing Amps with VoltAmps. They are different measurements and you cannot compare them. 20VA is not 20A! 20VA at 16V is 1.25A which has been explained before.

As member @WBahn always says units, units and units.

Another comment I’d like to mention is that in transformers, amps in can’t be used calculate amps out. The physical construction of the transformer, specifically its wire sizes, limit amps in to amps out. So, you can’t compare a transformer on a 120VAC 15A circuit to its output ampere rating. You have to use the actual transformer rating.

Possible, but I doubt it!
If 12v that would be ~1/2 amp.

24vac will be the step down if build in the 90's or earlier. As most likely will be the control transformer for your HVAC unit.

So I was Looking on Google to See what a Doorbell Transformer would Output in the 1980's.
It Says around 16 Volts I thought an Old Doorbell Transformer would Output Less Voltage then that for 1980's?

And what would the VA be for a Doorbell Transformer in the 1980's?

An older doorbell usually had three output terminals. One pair will be 8 or 10v, one pair will be 14 or 16v and the last pair will be labeled 20 to 24v. Our house when I was a kid in the 1970s used the 8v terminal for the single bell (ding) back-door ring (quiet) and the front door was louder double bell (ding-dong) connected to the 16v pair. I vividly remember it was rated at 20VA because I “borrowed” it for a few days of experiments. Luckily, my dad just concluded the doorbell was broken when a neighbor knocked - then he forgot about it until he noticed it was working the next time a visitor was at the door.
That story reminds me how often neighbors used doorbells when I was a kid vs today - when that hole next to the door is just for spying on deliver people or monitoring airplane parts falling from the sky.

Volts is insufficient to calculate VA. You need to know the amperage the source supplies as well. If you have a 12v transformer, it can provide 12VA, 24VA, 53VA or anything in between. Even in the 70s. It hadn’t changed.

There is no answer to your question. It’s like asking “I had a Ford automobile in 1972. What color was it?”

I’m guessing he either:
- needs some solid evidence to buy a modern transformer before his wife approves
- he is afraid some magical electrical phenomenon will damage the Ring Doorbell that he paid for and is rotting in the box. That is, He would not benefit from of the uninstalled doorbell than damage the doorbell and not get any use out of his expense.
